Roughcasting

Give your home a fresh new look

The exterior of your home is the first thing people see — and over time, Scotland's weather can leave roughcast looking tired, cracked, stained and worn.

At Rocksteady Roofing & Roughcasting Ltd, we specialise in transforming tired exterior walls with high-quality roughcasting that not only looks fantastic but is designed to provide long-lasting protection against the elements.

Whether you're modernising an older property or giving your home a complete facelift, our team can help.

Why choose Rocksteady

  • Traditional wet dash (harling) and modern dry dash
  • Full elevation re-roughcasting and patch repairs
  • Aggregate matching to blend with existing finishes
  • Crack stitching and substrate preparation
  • Wide choice of aggregate colours and sizes

Our roughcasting process

  1. 01

    Substrate Survey

We assess the wall condition, identify blown or hollow areas and check for underlying damp issues.

  2. 02

    Repairs

Cracks are stitched, loose render removed and the substrate properly prepared for a lasting bond.

  3. 03

    Basecoat & Reinforcement

A keyed basecoat with reinforcement is applied and cured to give the dash finish a solid foundation.

  4. 04

    Dash Application

Your chosen aggregate is applied evenly across the elevation for a consistent, weatherproof finish.

  5. 05

    Detail & Clean-down

Edges, reveals and corners are finished cleanly and the whole site is tidied before handover.

Built for Scotland's weather

Your exterior walls have to cope with rain, wind, frost, moisture and changing temperatures throughout the year. A professionally applied roughcast system provides a durable outer finish designed to withstand everyday weather exposure while helping protect the underlying walls. Great roughcasting isn't just about the final appearance — the preparation underneath is just as important as the finish you see. That's why we don't rush the process: we take care of the preparation, repairs, basecoat and reinforcement before applying the final roughcast.

Exterior Wall Coatings

Protect your walls. Transform your home.

Tired, stained or weathered exterior walls can make an otherwise beautiful home look dated. Our specialist wall coating system is designed to transform the appearance of your property while providing long-lasting protection from the Scottish weather.

At Rocksteady Roofing & Roughcasting Ltd, we use a specialist oil-based resin coating system designed to provide a durable, flexible and highly water-resistant finish.

Unlike standard masonry paint, our coating is designed to provide a protective barrier while allowing the wall to breathe.

Why our coating system

  • Transforms the appearance — gives tired, stained or dated walls a completely fresh, modern look
  • Weather protection — a protective outer layer designed to withstand rain, wind and changing Scottish conditions
  • Water repellent — hydrophobic properties help rainwater run off the surface rather than soaking in
  • Low maintenance — easier to keep looking clean and fresh than untreated or heavily weathered walls
  • Helps protect the existing walls — an additional protective layer shielding the exterior from everyday exposure
  • Wide range of colours — choose a colour to complement your property and create a completely different look
  • Enhances kerb appeal — dramatically improves the appearance of your home with a well-maintained finish
  • Cost-effective alternative — transform and protect the exterior without removing and replacing the existing finish

Our wall coating system

  1. 01

    Wall Wash & Preparation

We thoroughly wash the exterior walls to remove dirt, staining, algae and surface contamination, then assess their condition and identify areas requiring attention before any coating is applied.

  2. 02

    Repairs & Preparation

Cracked areas, fractures, damaged surfaces and blown or "bossed" areas — where the existing surface has detached or become unstable — are repaired before coating.

  3. 03

    Anti-fungicide Treatment

An anti-fungicide treatment deals with remaining organic growth and provides a clean, suitable surface for the coating system.

  4. 04

    Two Coats of Oil-Based Resin

Two coats of our specialist oil-based resin coating create a durable, protective finish — available in a range of colours to completely change and modernise your property's appearance.

  5. 05

    Contrast Finish

A contrasting colour around brickwork, window sills and architectural features highlights your property's character and gives a crisp, professional finish.

Hydrophobic. Flexible. Breathable.

The resin coating is designed to remain flexible with the normal movement of the building, preventing the flaking and blistering that can occur with more rigid traditional masonry paints. It is also microporous — extremely small pores stop liquid water penetrating the surface while allowing moisture vapour within the wall to escape, so your walls breathe naturally and moisture within the building fabric is managed.
